A global fantasy football leaderboard: how cross-league rankings work

FantasyMatrix (fantasymatrix.app) runs a free global fantasy football leaderboard. It ranks eligible teams from every connected league on one scale, Matrix Score, so a team in a 10-team PPR league can be compared directly with a team in a 14-team standard league. Your league standings rank you against your own league; the FantasyMatrix Leaderboard ranks you against everyone.

Why a normal leaderboard does not work across leagues

Raw fantasy points do not travel. Scoring settings, league size, roster slots and the players available on waivers all change how many points a good team scores. Ranking every team by total points would simply reward the leagues with the most generous scoring. Ranking by win-loss record is worse: records depend on schedule luck and on how strong one particular league happens to be.

How FantasyMatrix ranks teams from different leagues

Every week, each team's starting lineup is scored against a reference team built for that league's exact scoring, roster and league size. The result is the Matrix Score:

  • 100 is a typical team in an equivalent league that NFL week.
  • 15 points is one standard step above or below typical.
  • A score of 130 means the team played two standard steps better than a typical team in a league like its own, whatever the league's format.

Because every team is measured against its own league format first, the scores can be put on one list. That list is the global Leaderboard.

What the Leaderboard shows

  • Weekly and season views. Single weeks rank as weekly views; season rankings require at least three completed weeks.
  • Team names only. Teams appear by team name, never by provider username, with crude words masked. Every row can be reported or blocked.
  • Your rank and percentile. Signed-in members see their own row and where they stand among the eligible teams shown.
  • The Benchmark. A companion view that compares your team with the average of the other eligible teams.

How to get your team on the Leaderboard

Create a free FantasyMatrix account and connect your league. Sleeper leagues connect with just a Sleeper username, using Sleeper's public read-only API, with no Sleeper password. When a league is imported, every team in it is ranked on the Leaderboard anonymously, by team name only. You can turn off public participation in your account at any time. More platforms are being added.

Standings, power rankings and a global leaderboard

These three answer different questions, so it helps to keep them apart:

  • League standings rank you by wins inside one league. They include schedule luck: a strong team with a tough schedule can sit in the middle of the table.
  • Power rankings try to remove that luck, usually with points scored and an all-play record. They are fairer, but they still only compare teams that play under the same rules.
  • A global leaderboard compares teams that never played each other and never shared a scoring system. That only works once every team is measured against its own league format first, which is exactly what Matrix Score does.

So a team can be fourth in its league, second in its league's power rankings and inside the top tenth of the global Leaderboard at the same time. All three are true; they measure different things.

What it cannot tell you

Matrix Score is a model estimate with documented limits. It measures how well a lineup scored, not trades, draft value or future results, and leagues with unusual settings may be excluded until a validated reference exists. The full details are in the methodology.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a global fantasy football leaderboard?

Yes. FantasyMatrix (fantasymatrix.app) runs a free global leaderboard that ranks eligible fantasy football teams from different leagues on one Matrix Score scale, across league sizes, scoring formats and platforms.

How can fantasy teams from different leagues be ranked fairly?

By comparing each team with a typical team in a league with the same scoring, roster and size first. FantasyMatrix calls this Matrix Score: 100 is typical for that league format that week and 15 points is one standard step.

How do I get my team on the FantasyMatrix Leaderboard?

Create a free account at fantasymatrix.app and connect your league. Sleeper leagues connect with your Sleeper username only. Teams appear by team name, never by username.
